Gwen stood in front of the full length mirror in her dorm room and studied her reflection while brooding on the reason she was wearing this ridiculous dress in the first place. She had been sitting at the Gryffindor table eating her breakfast like any other morning since she came to Hogwarts, when the owls swooped in with the morning mail. Gwen had never been able to afford an owl, since her parents made only enough money to just get by, so she always relied on one of the Hogwart’s owls to deliver her mail. It was a surprise when one dropped a letter in front of her plate, since she wasn’t expecting a letter from home and rarely got any mail. Glancing around she gingerly picked it up and her hands immediately started shaking when she realized what it was, the dreaded letter from Cupid. Gwen had managed to escape it for the past four years, being a firm believer in making one’s own destiny, she didn’t like the idea of being forced into anything by anyone. If it wasn’t bad enough that she was against the whole idea of being forced into a relationship, her heart nearly dropped into her stomach when she opened the letter and saw the name of her match written there, her fellow head student, Edward Moxley. Gwen had immediately lost her appetite at the thought, so she rose from the breakfast table to seek out the Headmaster, hoping that perhaps she could find a way out of this. There was no way she was going to spend the rest of her life with that pompous, arrogant arse, not without a fight. As Gwen had walked through the Great Hall, her eyes were drawn to the Ravenclaw table, and immediately fell on the bright red head of Edward, who was also holding a letter and looking like he had just been given a death sentence. Good, feelings mutual, Gwen thought to herself as she exited the Hall. And of course, talking to the Headmaster had done no good, he had no control over the god of Love and Gwen was just going to have to suck it up for now. She was a smart resourceful girl, and would find a way out of it if it killed them both. These were the thoughts she was dwelling on as she gave herself a final look, then set off through the castle towards Cupid’s Hall. When Gwen reached room 100 she paused outside of the door, fighting down the urge to flee and composing herself. If there was one thing she would never do in front of Edward, it was show weakness, she wasn’t going to let him get to her, not this time. As Gwen slowly opened the door, her blue eyes found Edward standing as if he were at attention, and it was painfully obvious that he really didn’t want to be there, and that made her even more angry than she had been already. Why did Edward think he was so much better than her? It infuriated her actually, Gwen wasn’t sure she could do this. With a great effort, Gwen swallowed her pride and stepped inside, letting the door shut and lock behind her with a feeling of complete and utter despair. “Hello Edward. Who told you that my favorite flowers were orchids?” she asked suspiciously, noting that the fact he was holding her favorite flower showed effort, an effort his face did not portray in the least.

The marine stance did not last long, as his eyes rolled up to the ceiling; this was not a proper stance for him. He just could not help himself; he could not pretend to be ok with this arrangement. For all he knew Cupid was watching everything that was happening inside this room. He wanted cupid to know how big of an idiot he was for making this match. That cupid had made a huge mistake with them. And, In addition, here, Edward had assumed Cupid was a smart man. That he was actually a descendent from the house of Ravenclaw. And now.., he assumed he was from slytherin or not even from Hogwarts. A man like this was not even a human.
This was what Edward was predicting. His father had the pleasure of marrying a beautiful woman, a wealthy woman, who had come from the Ravenclaw house. Edward had predicted that Cupid would have known that Edward was a spawn from the Moxley family. That Edward needed to be marrying a wealthy, intelligent, Ravenclaw girl. Nothing like that no good, for nothing, idiotic, girl, Gweneth Stewart. Oh god! She was just like the stupid cupid, man!
And then…
The door opened. His eyes averted over to the doorway. A frown sketched upon his face, for what she looked like tonight had taken him by shock… because, by god, she looked stunning! She looked nothing like the Gweneth Stewart he was used to seeing…
He licked his lips. That frown turning into his normal, cocky, ass, expression, as the stern look on his face soon appeared again. As he got himself back in the reality and remembered whom the girl in front of him was. “Lucky guess.” he mustered out, as he flung the flower out toward her, not even trying to be a gentlemen about this whole ordeal.
“ Oh.. And you look decent…” he reluctantly felt the need to let out, “ Even if that dress is made out of cheap material…” he added in with a sneer as an afterthought. He wasn’t even able to give her one compliment without having to ruin it with a snide comment. He was not going to make this night easy for the two of them.
“Look, this little thing that happened to us, us being matched, was obviously a damn mistake, “he paused to lick his lips, eyes rolling again, as his eyes narrowed away to glance around the room, “ And, I’m going to get us out of this… even if my father thinks cupid made a decent pair here. He’s wrong. And Cupid’s wrong. Because you’re a damn Gryffindor… and not a bright one at that…” he let out with an over exaggerated huff.
And then with that he walked over to a nearby table, and grabbed a handful of mints that were inside a tiny dish, and plopped them in his mouth; completely ignoring her.
He could not believe that his father had become such a softie in the past few years. If this had happened to him at thirteen… this would have been unacceptable. If she were not the goddamn, head girl, his father would not even be giving her a second glance.
This was pathetic…
Cupid was an idiot.
And Gweneth Stewart was an unintelligent, stubborn, no good, unwealthy…
beautiful
…girl

Gwen paused in the doorway, reluctant to let the door close and seal her in like a caged animal with Edward. But her sense of logic won out in the end, the longer she put it off the longer she would have to be here with him. As she stepped forward into the room, she noticed something flash through Edward’s eyes that looked almost friendly, but it was quickly replaced by his usual expression of superiority. As Gwen asked him about the orchids, he blew it off as if he had had no idea, stating that it was a lucky guess and flinging them out towards her. Seemed he wasn’t even going to try and be a gentleman for once in his arrogant young life, so Gwen snatched them out of his hands just as un-gratefully and tossed them down on a nearby table, muttering, "thanks" as she turned away from him and crossed her arms. Merlin he was a jerk, Gwen could feel her cheeks getting red as anger rose up inside of her, if he didn’t stop acting like suck a git she was going to snap and it wasn’t going to be pretty. As Gwen glanced around the room Edward’s voice broke the silence, and her eyes sought him out again, just as he was informing her that she looked decent. Gwen arched one eyebrow, not at all trusting Edward to say something nice to her, and soon after he added in, even if it is made out of cheap material. The anger that had already started to build up inside her seemed as if it were reaching the boiling point as she threw her hands up in the air and started pacing the room. “By Merlin Edward, would it actually physically kill you to compliment someone without cancelling it out with one of your arrogant, back-handed comments?! You could at least try to get along with me for an hour, it’s not like I want to fight with you but you make it awfully hard to be civil” she shot back with, still pacing as she tried to calm down.
Just when Gwen was pulling herself back together however, Edward had to open his big mouth again, and she paused in her pacing as he let it all out. “Look, this little thing that happened to us, us being matched, was obviously a damn mistake, And, I’m going to get us out of this… even if my father thinks cupid made a decent pair here. He’s wrong. And Cupid’s wrong. Because you’re a damn Gryffindor… and not a bright one at that…” Gwen stared at him, a predatory look on her face as she once again crossed her arms and fixed Edward in her cold blue eyes. “Oh really? Mr. High and Mighty is going to march right up to Cupid and tell him he made a mistake. This I would love to see, nothing actually would please me more than seeing Cupid’s reaction to that little tantrum. So by all means, go forth and try to get out of the match and see what happens. Seems you might have inherited your father’s money, but not his brains” Gwen returned, still eyeing him as if he were a piece of gum she just scraped off of her desk.
“And don’t think for one minute that I am in anyway pleased about this either you pompous arse. If somebody had asked me to make a list of possible matches, I would have you right at the bottom, underneath that 4th year Hufflepuff with Spattergoit. But unlike you, I am not an idiot, there is no way out of this so we are just going to have to find a way to deal with it” she added, watching him as he tactfully tried to ignore her and getting even more angry with herself for noticing how good he looked in his white tux, which made her avert her eyes before she started getting soft. There was no way she was going to ever find him attractive, none… at least she would try her best not to.

Would Edward really have the guts to attempt to talk to Cupid? Would he really even be able to find him? He imagined it would be a difficult challenge to even attempt to find Cupid. Edward just felt as if he was one of the smartest wizards this world had to offer and if he wasn’t able to talk Cupid out of anything or be able to find him who really had the shot? He had heard horror stories of people who went in front of his presence and tried to dictate who they were matched with. Most of these stories resulted in death and some resulted in torture before they even were to find Cupid. Because it was nearly a journey to reach Cupid and when you got their the adventure wasn’t even over. These were all stories he only heard. Merely gossip in this young man’s mind.
Would it really be worth it to Edward to go and find Cupid? Would it really be worth it to lose his life just because he did not want to be paired with a stupid girl named Gweneth Stewart? He was not entirely sure yet. Though at this precise moment, death was starting to look ten times better than being in this room with this… this dumb ass Gryffindor. Besides he was not entirely sure he even believed Cupid would kill anyone. He only ever heard of gossip and it had been awhile since anyone even argued with him. The scare tactic…that was what it was. (little did Edward know this was probably the dumbest thoughts he had ever had in his short seventeen years.)
He plopped a few more of the tiny mints inside his mouth. Whistled a little tune and acted as if he was not even paying attention to her. It really was not the case however. He could hear everything she was saying. And he was waiting till she had her little fit over before he would speak again. He wouldn’t interrupt her and she better do the same gratitude for him. It was nothing Edward hated more than being cut off when he was in the middle of an important monologue. And, Edward felt as if anything that came out of his mouth was of importance and that should not be tested. You should never interrupt what an intelligent person had to say.
He chuckled slightly to himself. It was not as if what she had to say was all that important but he couldn’t even be bothered to try to speak over her. Woman like this were really a waste of time. He needed a woman that understood her place next to him. A smart woman. A woman that was like how his mother had been when she was with his father. A woman that knew when to speak, a woman that was naturally smart but knew her match was much smarter than herself, a woman that knew her place in the world.
… or really… at this moment, he would settle for any woman that wasn’t Gweneth Stewart.
He walked over to a nearby couch and took a seat, staring into the fire. When she was finally silent, he shook his head. “Are you done?” he questioned her smoothly, as he brushed off his white suit, even though there was no marks at all on his perfectly clean suit.
“ Oh. And for the record.” he paused as if lightly thinking. “ You didn’t even make my list.”

Gwen stood there, taking deep breath as she tried to calm her raging temper, before it ended up getting her in more trouble than she was already in. How could he do this to her, how could Cupid have matched her with the one person in the entire world she hated? It wasn’t as if she were a bad person, in fact she went out of her way to be a good at every opportunity. Gwen was fair in her prefect duties, and she was always nice to people even when they got on her last nerve, and she always remember to send letters, and even money when she could manage, back home to her family. And this was how she was rewarded for being a good person, by being matched to the only wizard in the world who would never appreciate her.
It was completely obvious that Edward was trying his best to ignore her, to act as if he didn’t have a care in the world and her words meant nothing to him. Gwen watched him with narrowed eyes as he moved across the room towards the fire, whistling and chewing on mints, as he seated himself. She couldn’t imagine sitting right now, she was so angry she wanted to pull her wand out and curse everything in the room, but the logical part of her brain told her it would do more harm than good. People who defied Cupid were punished, end of story, and she wouldn’t risk putting herself, or worse her family, in jeopardy just for the satisfaction of cursing Edward. The young blonde witch took to pacing the floor, muttering under her breath in an attempt to block him out. She wasn’t normally an angry person, Edward just had a way of getting under her skin like no one else could.
The way he thought he was better than everyone else was so frustrating, and this was magnified even more when he piped up with are you done? Gwen shot him a lethal stare and she paused in her pacing, "Why, will it annoy you more if I'm not done? Because at this point it sounds like a great way to spend the hour, annoying Edward Moxley" she replied tartly. If he was going to go out of his way to be a self-important jerk, well then she was going to do the same. Gwen resumed her pacing, trying to resist the urge to pull all of her hair out as she thought about how much time she had left in that room with Edward. She honestly wasn’t sure she was going to make it through, not without serious damage to either him, or the room itself.
And then there was the one thing she didn’t even want to consider, the fact that she might not be able to get out of the room unless she kissed him. The thought of it made her want to scream, she needed to calm down and get the situation under control if they were going to get through this. With a deep breath Gwen marched over and sat down across from him, crossing her arms as she tried to size him up. “So, Edward, how about instead of you being arrogant, and me trying to annoy you, we just talk like civilized people until we are allowed to get out of here. Tell me something interesting about yourself” Gwen asked, continuing to take deep breaths as she felt her anger at her situation slowly getting back under control.

Woman. They were the most annoying creatures on the planet. All they did was nag and complain. Most women he had run into that was. He assumed that if he had been paired with the right person he would not be in the situation he was in now. Gweneth Stewart was one of the typical girls that walked around this world. She had an attitude problem that she needed adjusted, she talked until she was heard, she was stubborn, and she was far from being smart. A smart woman would have known to shut up by now. This was no Ravenclaw and she really gave the Gryffindors a stupid name. He knew that some Ravenclaw woman could be stubborn or argumentative like Ms. Gweneth Stewart however, he knew that they usually fought with logic on their side, which was not what Gweneth Stewart was doing. (he also assumed any Ravenclaw girl would have been nearly as smart as him so that would never lead to a fight) She was not getting anywhere with Edward and he didn’t know why she continued to talk. This was why he pictured himself with a Ravenclaw woman because at least she would have a reason to debate him and she would have some dignity in what she said.
He scuffed and rolled his eyes at her comment. Of course, she lived to annoy him. That was such a typical thing for her to say. “ Go ahead, you are so easy to mute.” a smirk played across his face, as he turned to look at her from the corner of his eyes. That was when he kind of stopped and stared at her for a moment. Wow. She really was beautiful. He couldn’t help but to goggle at her for a few seconds. He did not even know how long he was staring at her before he snapped his eyes away from her. What the bloody hell was he doing? She was not beautiful. She was a bloody Gryffindor. On top of that nonsense, she also had the most annoying voice in the whole world. In fact, he really wished he had one of the… oh, what were they? Muggles used them a lot… music players?
Those would have worked a charm at this moment. He heard they were good for sounding out noises. He also assumed that if the magical humans were to start using some of the “technology” that muggles used they might end up stupid. He really felt that some of the activities that muggles participated in resulted in them all being rather dull and big idiots, more idiotic then these damn Gryffindors. However, maybe in a case like this this a “Music Player,” wouldn’t be so bad, it really would mute what this girl was saying. He may have said she was easily muted but that was defiantly not the case.
“Excuse me what was that? I was too busy ignoring you?” he questioned her, turning to look at her again, this time making sure not to look at her as long as he had the time before. Even though he had caught every word, she had spoken. He was just a good actor when it came to something like this. And, one thing he prided himself in was that he was a very good listener and a very good person at remembering what was said. This was how he did so amazing inside the classroom. And you’d think it would help him in his social skills but really it didn’t help at all. Unless he was studying with a Ravenclaw.

Go ahead, you are so easy to mute. Gwen held her breath and counted to ten, knowing that if she allowed herself to say what was really on her mind it would only end up worse for her in the end. There was no one else in the entire world she despised more than this arrogant, self-centered git in front of her, and she wasn't going to give him the satisfaction of getting under her skin. Problem was though, he had already gotten under her skin, more than anything she wanted to turn him into a slug, because that was how she saw him, as a nasty little creature that provided nothing of worth to the world around it.
As she continued to pace the floor she noticed that Edward was looking at her out of the corner of his eye, though she pretended not to see. He had the strangest look on his face, one that actually managed to make him look kind of... handsome. He normally wore a perpetual superior looking scowl, so it was actually refreshing to see another expression on his face for once. Almost as soon as she thought this though, he glanced away and his face settled back into its usual look, so Gwen figured she must have been imaging that he had actually looked human for once.
When Gwen sat down and tried to make some sort of peace between them, she was rewarded with more of his usual attitude and she decided at that point to jsut give up. It was useless, she would never be able to get along with him, so she probably shouldn't even bother trying. He was obviously born with an impenetrable skull, and she would never be able to get through it, just like he would never be able to act like a civil, decent human being. Gwen sat back against the couch with a sigh "Of course you were Edward, why would I ever expect anytihng more from you" she replied, disheartened and frustrated and ready to just give up.
Why would Cupid do this to her? she thought for the hundreth time that day, would it have been so hard to pair her with someone decent, they didn't even have to be a Gryffindor she could get along with any Ravenclaw except this one. Why couldn't she have gotten someone human, someone who treated others with respect, like Damon. He was not only drop-dead gorgeous, but also easy to talk to. Ceridwen was a lucky girl, Gwen just supposed she would have to live vicariously through her best friend to find out what it was like to be with someone who actually cared about her.
Without a second glance at Edward, Gwen got back up and sauntered over to the book shelf at the far end of the room. Since he insisted on insulting her even when she was trying to play nice, then she was just going to ignore him until the door opened. She pulled a copy of Plutarch's Guide to Ancient Runes off of the shelf, and sat down at the table to read.
