Johnny was not in a good mood. It was early on a Sunday morning, and his breakfast had been rudely disturbed by an unwelcome owl dropping a letter on his lap. Now, anyone in their right mind wouldn't think of upsetting a hungry Jonathan Townsend, because, well, it just wasn't done. His silent moods were enough to deter anyone from such an act. But it appeared owls didn't care for such courtesies, and so he had received his damned letter from Cupid and had his day completely ruined in the blink of an eye.
Having felt too sick to finish his full English breakfast, Johnny had proceeded to dramatically throw his fork down on his plate, and storm out of the Great Hall with a face like thunder. The grounds had provided little comfort for him, since it was too early for many people to be up and about, so there wasn't much to distract him from his destructive thoughts. You see, Johnny was a free spirit at heart. He liked to have choices. He liked to have fun. And he liked to have a say in who he wanted to spend his life with. Obviously he had been aware of Cupid's rules all his life, but it didn't mean he had to be happy about it. Sure, it was the done thing. Normal, in fact. But he hated it. He liked a lot of girls at school, but he didn't want to be tied to any of them for life. He was only seventeen years old, for crying out loud! He surely had tons more girls to kiss before he was pinned down to just one!
With a deadly scowl on his face, he decided that he needed to talk to someone about it, and the first person to enter his head was his friend Caleb. They had been close since their first year, despite being in different houses, and so Johnny instinctively carried himself up countless flights of stairs to the Gryffindor common room. He couldn't enter, of course, but Caleb had to leave at some point. Or return, if he was already out and about in the castle. The Fat Lady was snoring loudly in her portrait, so Johnny slumped against the wall, his dreaded letter tucked into the back pocket of his jeans, and waited, his eyes burning holes into the floor.

It's the boys that wanna have fun
To say Caleb was a heavy sleeper would be an understatement. There could be a duel going on in front of him and he wouldn't move in the slightest. So when the owl was tapping on his window that morning, he didn't budge. He didn't even hear it over his snoring. It wasn't until his window was opened by a roommate and the owl came biting at his head tha the even noticed the owl trying to get his attention. "It's far too early, OWL!" Caleb grunted at the owl, trying to cover himself up, but the owl was persistant and left him with a letter.
Cupid's Letter.
Great. Just great. Caleb had been hoping to avoid Cupid and his stupid pairing. Caleb had actually planned on being a bachelor his whole life. He had pictured just scraping by and having one night stands every single night. He hadn't ever thought himself as one to settle down or find someone who he would be willing to deal with for the rest of his life. He had even hoped that Cupid would decide he was unmatachable and leave Caleb alone. He was obviously wrong.
Caleb tried to roll over and fall back asleep, but the letter loomed in his mind. He forced himself out of bed (way too early for Caleb Etherns to be up) and managed to throw clothes on his body. Caleb truely didn't know what to do. He didn't want to read the letter because he didn't even want to know what was in it. So instead, he tucked the letter in his pocket and went to go find someone anyone that would understand.
That's when Caleb left his common room to see Johnny Townsend, a good friend dispite housing differences, waiting outside the common room. "I take it you don't come with good news, huh?" Caleb asked, turning back around and gesturing for Johnny to take a seat in the commonroom. Caleb laid out on the large plush couch and stared at Johnny. "John, I got paired. This isn't just a disaster to me, think about all the other girls!" Caleb cried, but being almost completely serious.[/blockquote]

After a good fifteen minutes, Johnny was still planted resolutely outside the Fat Lady's portrait. He wouldn't move for hours, if that was what it took. Students had started to come and go on the breakfast run, but it was almost half an hour later when he heard a familiar sleepy voice address him. Glancing up, Johnny watched as Caleb took one look at him, deemed him the harbinger of death, and turned back into the Gryffindor common room. Giving the Fat Lady one last sly glance to make sure she wasn't looking, Johnny slipped through the doorway into the foreign room, which, really, after being friends with Caleb for so long, really wasn't that foreign anymore. They always seemed to find way to sneak each other in.
He stomped across the room after his friend, and gave Caleb a blank look as he announced that he had finally been paired with a girl by Cupid, and seemed pretty devastated about it. Pulling his own letter out of his back pocket, Johnny shoved it onto Caleb's chest. "It's not even funny," he said, voice deadly calm as it tended to be when Johnny was so enraged. "Who the hell is Emilia, errr.... I can't can't even pronounce her last name!" He slammed himself down into an armchair, glaring furiously at the fireplace. "I can't believe this, Cal." He shook his head, angrily.
And of all the timing, Caleb had gotten his letter today, too. Maybe that sadistic little twerp had arranged it to ruin both their lives together, at the same time. He knew his friend wasn't even joking when he whined about all of the other girls he was going to miss out on. It was bloody true! At the age of just seventeen, they were meant to be faithful to just one person? To miss out on all of those life experiences that they were entitled to? It was bloody outrageous! "Who did you get?" he snapped, unable to even look Caleb in the eye for fear of ending up in an argument with him since they were both so annoyed. Johnny's foot tapped remarkably fast on the floor, the only part of him, as usual, that couldn't hold in the explosive anger he was flooded with right then.

It's the boys that wanna have fun
Anger was eminating from both boys. In any normal circumstance, Caleb would curse the nerest Slytherin. Johnny was lucky he was the one exception Caleb would ever make. Caleb looked around, attempting to find someone he could truely take his anger out on, but found no unsuspecting first years. Now what was he supposed to do? Sit here and talk about his "feelings" with John? Fat chance. Caleb didn't even share his feelings with himself, let alone someone else.
All Caleb wanted to do was shout and scream at this Cupid fellow. Johnny was supposed to be single the rest of his life too! They were both going to get flats right next door to each other and if they brought too many girls home and the other didn't have any, they'd pass a few over. It was supposed to be a really easy-going time. Now, here they both sat, their futures in Cupid's hands. Bollucks. Johnny and Caleb were both screwed.
Caleb took Johnny's letter and furrowed his brow. His match had to be some sort of joke. It didn't seem possible that John out of all the people would be paired with this girl. "You've got Emilia? Mate, she's in my house." Caleb said, looking around as though she'd pop out of no where. "She's a pretty cool girl-" before Caleb could continue, he cut himself off. He wasn't going to screw Johnny over like that. "If I see her, I'll send you the other way." He told him.
Caleb didn't even know who his match was. All he could remember was Jagger. He grumbled when Johnny asked who his own match was. "Dunno and definately don't give a damn." Caleb grumbled. He kept his eyes glued to the fire, making sure their tempers didn't get the better of them. They had gotten into their fair share of spats before, but nothing that was major. Plus, their tempers were at peaks at the present time which wouldn't help them in the least.[/blockquote]

Johnny nearly jumped out of his seat with nerves as Caleb mentioned that this Emilia girl was in his house, and she was kind of cool. "She's not here, is she!?" His eyes darted all over the room, scanning every girl that passed by with an intense scrutiny that was enough to put anyone off him at that moment. "If I see her, I'll send you the other way," Caleb added, seeming to think better of talking the girl up. Johnny didn't blame him one bit.
If he knew who Cal's match was, he'd do exactly the same thing. It was selfish, sure, but they had had so many plans in place, for a great life after school, that the thought of saying anything to encourage Cal to ditch it all was just out of the question. Johnny knew Caleb probably had the same sentiments. He sank back into his seat, content, for the moment, that Emilia wasn't in the room. He trusted Caleb enough in that. Besides, who knew how he might be with her if he met her before their 'date'. He'd probably make an awful impression and upset her quite a bit, judging by the mood he was in now. He really wanted to know who Cal had been matched with, though. Possibly out of competitiveness and the desire to have been lumped with a better looking girl than his friend. It was petty, but he couldn't help it.
"What are we gonna do?" he sighed, one hand ruffling his hair, rubbing his face, scratching his neck, moving to his mouth so he could chew on a finger nail. "There has to be some sort of loophole in this. This can't just be it...." Johnny had the sinking feeling, though, that this was one of those rare times when there was no getting around something. No cheats. No loopholes. No bartering your way out of it. Which all irked him a great degree, as those sorts of things were his specialty. He always found a way around things that didn't suit him. Always. "Do you not even know your girls name?" he asked, trying to pass the question off as an after-thought. "I mean, I'd like to have the names of both people who are gonna ruin our whole lives." There was a possibility he was being a bit dramatic, but he didn't really care at that point. The disappointment was overwhelming. He felt like his life had been ripped away from him. And Caleb, too.

It's the boys that wanna have fun
Caleb tried to think up every single thing he could do to avoid this. He could make the girl hate him. That might work. He could possibly just avoid her all together. Yet, that comes with the fact that he'd have to know who she was to begin with. He could just sleep around until Cupid got the hint that he didn't want to be matched. Who did Cupid think he was anyways, messing with Caleb and Johnny's system? They had everything going right and here came Cupid to ruin it for them.
Caleb kept his eyes peeled to make sure Emilia didn't come around. If she did, Caleb would let Johnny make a run for it. "Knew you'd always turn good." Caleb attempted to joke, but it was a long shot with the current situation. Caleb couldn't even muster up a smirk at his own comment. They always joked about their house rivalry, but right now, Johnny miswell have been a Gryffindor. Best mate a Gryffindor and now his girl was one too? Johnny should just start wearing red to avoid conflict.
Johnny's question was open ended. What were they going to do? All their options were point blank. They just simply didn't have any. "I have... no idea, mate." Caleb said, running a stressed hand through his already perfected hair. "Maybe just drop out of school? Or find this Cupid and beat some sense into him?" Caleb didn't even have to say them aloud, Johnny was probably considering the same thing. Only if they could find him, now...
Caleb furrowed his eyebrows at Johnny and took the letter from Cupid into his hands and tossed it over. How could he forget the girl's name? It was burned onto the back of his eyelids. The neat handwriting, the loop at the end of her first name. Caleb almost choked, but forced the name out. "Janessa Jagger." He mumbled, but was sure Johnny heard him, they were the only ones in the common room. "Don't think I'm standing for this, mate. We're going to find a way out of it." [/blockquote]

Johnny raised an incredulous eyebrow at Caleb. "Beat up Cupid? I know we're desperate, Cal, but that's a bit stupid, isn't it?" He leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees, head in his hands as his eyes burned through his friend's skull, brain ticking over remarkably fast, even for Johnny. He didn't want this. Not yet. But beating the crap out of Cupid was just way over the top. Johnny had heard rumours. Lots of horrible rumours that he wasn't sure he wanted to believe. His parents had always sheltered him from that sort of thing, telling him not to worry about it, and that he would be matched with his perfect girl and be wonderfully happy.
He frowned, giving Cal an uncertain look. "I've heard he kills people if they rebel against their match," he admitted, eyes looking a little wide and desperate as he voiced his worry. "I'm not that eager to die. But there has to be some way around it. I don't know, maybe we could make the girls hate us enough to back out of the match, that way they'd be the ones to get punished for it.... wouldn't they?" He honestly wasn't sure about the details like that, and he didn't like the thought of having some poor girls life on his conscience.
Caleb was muttering something quietly, and Johnny cocked his head, trying to catch the words. Oh, Merlin, his match! "Janessa Jagger!?" he blurted out, mouth dropping open with amusement as he began to laugh loudly. It was lucky the common room seemed to be deserted aside from them, because he would have drawn quite a bit of attention to himself for that laugh. "Seriously, mate! And you're going on about me coming good with a Gryff girl! Janessa Jagger is a freakin' Hufflepuff! Hahahahaha!" He fell back into his chair, finding this all too hilarious, though maybe his frayed nerves were adding to the hysteria just a bit.
