BRIAR MICHAELS. but at times i wondered if i had not come a long way to find that what i had been searching for was something i left behind "Diffindo."
"Diffindo."
"Diffindo."
Briar frowned, peering down in the poor light at the cracked wall. It was late in the evening at Hogwarts-- and for once with any homework, the girl had just now found the time for exploration. The sky was murky with storm clouds-- so anywhere far off from the school wasn't a good option-- and set aglow with an eerie orange light from the dim and fading sunset. After wandering aimlessly through the corridors for a while, Briar had found herself climbing up the steps to the astronomy tower.
She'd been up here thousands of times before-- but only for class. The girl had found thousands of more things to do, Quidditch, explore the other hallways, homeworks, or have some fun with some extra spellbooks she'd bought with some leftover birthday shillings. But after four whole years at Hogwarts, Briar was mentally kicking herself for never thinking of thoroughly exploring the Astronomy tower.
The girl had wandered aimlessly around the circular balcony, around the telescopes that had been left behind by careless students-- peering up with a shielding hand at th orange red sky and the faint outline of the moon that was slowly growing stronger as the sky grew darker. Finally, at a loss after muttering Dissendium and Aparecium several times and flicking her Cedar wand in several directions-- Briar took a seat down on the cobblestone and leaned her back against the high stone walls.
Crick.
Briar frowned, and turned around, her light bond hair hitting her lightly i the face as she revolved. Faintly, having to squint in the dim evening light-- the girl could make out a crack that lined the tower's wall, emanating an odd white light. Eying it a moment longer, Briar felt a familiar pang of excitement and adrenaline flood her veins.
She grinned.
"Diffindo."
"Diffindo."
"Diffindo."
Briar leaned back on her knees-- sighing loudly as she furrowed her brow in concentration. The girl knew she could probably get in trouble for trying to crack the wall, but the possibility of adventure was too great. Why was the crack glowing? It couldn't possibly be the other side, the staircase was lit by candles. What was behind it? And why? How? But her spells were hardly effecting the wall, and Briar wasn't keen on using Confringo to blow up the entire wall. Yet, merely cutting the wall back and forth wasn't doing much--
The girl huffed and sat back on her legs, out of ideas.

x he tried to teach me from the very start the meaning of love, so nobody breaks my heart tap, tap, tap homework was not getting done. The tapping of his quill on his parchment was now leaving ink splots all over. His mind was off into a Colton whirlwind. This was a common occurrence for the young man, as he sat in the Hufflepuff Common Room, constantly attempting to do his work. His mind was like a constant wave in the ocean. He was known to have an amazing thought and then it soon washed it’s way out of his mind, like the waves washed the wave out of the ocean, and onto the shore. This was an often occurrence in his life. He was so side tracked that he often lost track of what he was doing and would be on a lack of sleep for this exact reason. For the poor boy had to stay up late into the night to finish assignments.
As the tapping continued his eyes were exploring the night. The beautiful skies and stars were so far away from his vision. He stood up and walked over to the small window. The only window inside the Dungeons. He often wished that the Hufflepuff Common Room had been in a tower. For Colton loved to stargaze and it wasn’t easy inside the Dungeons. They only gave the Common Room one window, a tiny window, a window that didn’t bring in much light. Though he assumed it had to be ok because if it wasn’t for this reason, he’d never walk up to the Astronmy tower, and that was where the real action in the sky took place. That was where a person could really let their minds run away with their thoughts.
The quill was now sitting on his parchment as he wondered away from the table, wondered out of the Dungeons, and made his way up to the Astronomy Tower. His homework thoughts long gone from his mind. His homework thoughts would soon come back, and a wide-eyed Colton, would rush back to his Common Room, and do a last minute assignment. The way Colton constantly lived his life in Hogwarts. Just slowly passing by in his classes. But, he didn’t much mind, because for all the moments not wasted on homework, his moments were wasted on time with friends, and happy memories. He rather have happy memories, then have memories of school work all the time.
His feet slowly made their way up the long set of stairs. Always exhausting the boy but ihealways knew it gave him great exercise. So he wasn’t complaining. Even though he didn’t really need the exercise. The poor bloke was literally as skinny as a toothpick. Trudging along up the stairs he finally let out a breath, a over exaggerated. “ Whoop!” in clarity, that he was happy he made it to the top. Then his eyes narrowed, to look at his surroundings, as they came to meet the young fourth year Briar Michaels. And he gave a confused expression, as his eyes ands mouth formed into a smile, a happy look, to see the young girl standing there. The confused expression as to what she was doing?
“ Hey there, Briar. What are you doing?” he asked her, that Colton smile never leaving his young face.

BRIAR MICHAELS. but at times i wondered if i had not come a long way to find that what i had been searching for was something i left behind
Briar sat up quite suddenly from her hunched over position on her knees—swallowing a startled squeak, but giving a cheerful glance in the direction of the voice all the same. Oh, Briar, never frightened beyond startled. Won’t she have a fun time with this mysterious white light? Continuing her glance, Briar squinted—the dark shape of a person silhouetted by the scarce evening light, before the girl finally made sense of the tall shadow and the voice combined. Quickly, Briar turned from pleasantly cheerfully, to genuinely pleased. Colton. Sixth Year. Her own house. Friendly enough. Smart enough. Maybe he could help.
Briar piped back a cheerful hello, and thought a moment longer before responding—giving a fleeting glance back towards the large crack in the wall she’d expanded. “I’m exploring,” the girl responded a few moments later, rather vaguely (though she didn’t mean it), “and unfortunately, I don’t know enough spells to blow things up so I’m rather at a loss.”
Well, she knew a few bigger ones, like Confringo and Expulso—but those were likely to blow up the entire wall and land Briar in detention, something she had yet to do so far (and planned to keep it that way). Since Colton had arrived, Briar had tried the banishing charm, Protego, and a few others that Briar were sure could’ve worked. All did nothing but scratch at this strange white light, and Briar was on the verge of giving up.
Psh. Not.
Briar poked the crack with the tip of her wand before standing up and jabbing at it with the tip of her boot, having little effect other than to demonstrate what she was getting at. “I don’t suppose you know much about mysterious cracked walls and the weird white light that emanates from them?”

x he tried to teach me from the very start the meaning of love, so nobody breaks my heart A small serene laugh escaped the boy’s lips. The young girl was always a curious one. Always on routes to find a new adventure. This did not come as a shock to Colton. For being a Hufflepuff she could have easily passed as a Gryffindor. From what Colton always gathered about Gryffindors was that they were always eager for an adventure. Eager to find out new and exciting things. This could describe the young Briar rather well.
Although Colton could understand why the sorting hat placed her in Hufflepuff, even though she had a curious mind, and was full of adventure, she was a loyal friend, and a nice young girl. It was not as if the sorting hat made a mistake with her. For the sorting hat never made mistakes. Briar just gave the Hufflepuffs something to watch out for. Many of the older Hufflepuffs kept an eye on the young Briar. Concerned for her safety, afraid she might do something to harm herself. Like in this moment if a spell went wrong, and she didn’t destroy the wall, it could backfire on her, or much worse scenarios.
Even with the situation being slightly dangerous, it did not mean that Colton was going to tell her to stop. If anything, he was going to try to help her. Help her so that there was less of a risk for her getting harmed. Also, help her because he did not know how to say no to the young fourteen year old. She had this small baby face, and many students found it hard to say no to her. It just was not an easy task. So they often helped her in her ‘little’ adventures, which was what Colton was about to do.
He racked his mind, trying to come up with a better spell. It was however no use. Colton had never been a very good student at Hogwarts. He passed by with decent grades. It was not as if he did not try, it was simply because he had a very distracted mind. A teacher would be presenting a lesson and his mind would go off to the windows, or a different class, or a friend, and he would blank out and miss important discussions. So he figured anything he had learned when it came to blowing up things were far past his mind.
Colton pulled out his wand, pointing it at the wall. “Umm…” he hesitated, glancing at Briar out of the corner of his eye. “Maybe two people working at this will make it bust open better,” he said nodding his head, giving her a slight smile, as he spoke again. “What spell would you like to try?” he questioned, his eyes narrowing back at the wall, a nervous look on his face, but the smile never faltered.

BRIAR MICHAELS. but at times i wondered if i had not come a long way to find that what i had been searching for was something i left behind
It was true on the fact that Briar often got herself into bigger situations then she could handle—in only her first month at Hogwarts, in her first year, she’d earned herself a broken arm and a narrowly avoided a stupefy curse sent at her by a startled fifth year after Briar popped out of a secret-passageway (so kindly shown to her by an older Hufflepuff) . Some of her, er, adventures were small and pointless—but others less so, which it seemed to be the latter for this one, and Briar poked irritably at the crumbling rock with the tip of her wand again.
‘What spell would you like to try?’
Briar paused, mulling it over in her brain a little. Diffindo wasn’t helping much, merely scratching at the surface—while she needed to get deeper. Explosions were out of the questions (she’d had more than one bad run in using Confrigo, a curse she could never seem to get right…) , and everything in the miscellaneous section wasn’t helping. Well, except…
“There’s one spell I haven’t tried yet,” the forth-year said dubiously, leaning her head slightly to the side—not unlike a dog—“but if two people did it at once, maybe it could work.” She oh-so-conveniently left out that she hasn’t even officially learned the spell yet, not really thinking it important, only flipping it by in her charms book several times. But Colton was in his sixth-year, so he should know it! (Unless they never covered that at all in Hogwarts) “De…pyro…? No, deprimo. Sorry. That’s it.”
Yes. That was it. Of course. Not a doubt. It was the pressure charm—as in, it created a large amount of pressure in a small amount of space. It shouldn’t blow down the entire wall, and should get through the stone easily (with, you know, a lot of flying pebbles and other debris—but details, details)—and to the source of the mysterious glowing white light.
This seemed like a good time to break out in evil laughter, but Briar didn’t, merely staring fixated at the stone as if studying it. (In reality she was blanking off in attempt to remember the spell better.)

x he tried to teach me from the very start the meaning of love, so nobody breaks my heart Colton you need to learn to say no.
The headmaster often told the young man this, as Colton would be sitting upon his big fluffy, red chairs, in his office. The headmaster always had to shake his head at the boy in pity. Colton had always been a difficult student to punish. For Colton was one of the nicest students he had ever met. The problem with Colton was the fact that he was often getting himself in trouble.
Trouble because the young man just could not say no. He was a helper, a giver, and a caring young man. When someone asked him to do a favor, he would do it. It was as if there were no questions asked.
You see for Colton always had it in his mind that when a person asked for help, it wouldn’t lead to trouble. (even though he had been sent to the office at least once a month for helping fellow students with spells, and pranks, because he was so gullible. The headmaster did not even have the heart to punish him he just often told Colton to try to be more cautious before saying yes to something. ) Ok. It was not as if he was so gullible that he would end up killing someone. It wasn’t like he was an idiot…
It was the simple tasks. Tasks like casting spells. Or tying up a water bucket over the door. Tasks like these often led him in the headmaster’s office. Sometimes the headmaster did not have a choice but to give him a detention. And, Colton would just take it as it was, he never complained about his punishment.
He was smart enough to know if a spell was used to really hurt someone and or if something he was about to do would hurt a person as well. However, when it came to little small things like tying water up, or putting jelly beans on the ground, he was clueless.
Then as soon as something happened, he would go. ‘Oh no! What did I just do!? ‘And feel horrible. The sad thing was he never blamed the person that asked him to do it. He always said something along the lines of ‘what I did must have just gone wrong…’ he was literally that gullible. However, on a few occasions, sometimes he slowly started to realize if a person was taking advantage of him… and then, he would try to avoid them in the ‘nicest’ way possible.
However, here was Briar Michaels. A young girl in his own house. A nice girl; an adventurous girl. A girl that would not purposely get him in trouble.
He kind of knew of the spell she was talking about. She wanted to see what was inside the wall. A little blowing up of the wall could not hurt, could it? Walls were easily fixed… possibly. He decided he would just leave it in her hands… and stay positive, and look for the best outcome.
His wand was ready in his hand as he nodded his head. “Ok.” and then he muttered out the words…
“ Deprimo!”

BRIAR MICHAELS. but at times i wondered if i had not come a long way to find that what i had been searching for was something i left behind
For a second, Briar thought he might refuse. Which, the girl wouldn’t have been offended if that was the case—many people might’ve refused in a task to help, er, damage the school walls. Not that this was Briar’s intention at all—she merely was curious about the light, even though her mother continuously sent her owls saying, ‘Curiosity killed the cat.’
Still, the forth-year brightened when Colton agreed—chirping a mindful thank you—twirling her wand back and forth in her palm and aiming the readied tool directly at the smallish crack. She waited a moment while the older Hufflepuff did the same (more or less), racking her brain for several final small adjustments on how she would sever the spell from the wand. It was a curse, and curses were never Briar’s forte, but she would probably get it right.
Probably.
She listened intently, wand only wavering slightly from her position half-crouched on the cobble-stone—waiting for the sound of Colton’s voice so they could perform the spell simultaneously. Finally, he inhaled sharply (like most people do before a spell)—and Briar quickly blurted out, “Deprimo!” voice just a half-a-second behind Colton’s as her wand let loose a loud bang and a boomerang shaped burst of air.
Crack!
Briar stared beadily at the wall, disbelieving that the combinations of the two quite powerful spell did nothing more than knock a Ping-Pong sized chunk of stone out of the layered gray wall. Disappointed at the results, the girl reached forward, on her knees, and brushed out a bit of stray debris. Well, at least she had a better view of the light, the mysterious white light and all—which was the goal in the end, right? The tunneled viewing section seemed more… circular and symmetrical now, deeper and brighter. The light was coming in much more strongly now, Briar shrugging in half disappointment.
Smart enough not to try and touch the mysterious white light and co. with her hand, Briar reached forward with the tip of her wand—attempting to clear out bits of gravel from the indention. It was deeper than she expected, and the witch smiled at a small glimmer of satisfaction that came forward. Maybe this had done more than she’d expected. “I think if we do it once more—” And Briar’s wand hit the trigger at the back of the tunnel—her wand growing suddenly hot—Briar’s grip on it loosening and eyes widening in the realization that she probably shouldn’t be sticking her wand back there either—
If you came up those stairs right then, you might’ve heard a glimpse of a half-finished sentence—but when you reached the top of the stairs—it was if the speaker had never been there at all.

x he tried to teach me from the very start the meaning of love, so nobody breaks my heart Oh what was he doing? What was he getting himself into? He knew they should not be doing what they were doing. However, his curiosity began to strike him. It began to make him think otherwise. Even if he was curious, if it was not for Briar being here, right now he would not be doing any of this. Colton was naturally a curious person. But even with a curious mind he didn’t always go and fill out his curious mind. He just left it alone. The boy was also rather add which just meant that he may be curious about something for a full minute, then a few seconds later, he was back to finding something else to do.
His only problem was that when someone else had a curious mind, someone that did not give up on a curiosity, and dragged him into it, he did not give up. Colton really was a people pleaser. This was the main reason he was helping the young Hufflepuff girl. It still sometimes took Colton off guard at how curious and adventurous this girl really was. For Briar could have easily managed her way into the house of Gryffindor. She was brave and always had a mind full of wonder.
He bit his lip as he walked over to Briar, squinting his eyes. “What are you doing? “He asked, hand resting on her shoulder. He was taking a protective stance upon her now. “We should… Briar we should stop messing with it. Leave it be… “ he muttered distinctly under his breath. He had a slight feeling that it would not work though. Briar was already too far in to the hole and seeing the light to stop well she was ahead.
And then, before Colton could even begin to say anything else, he went silent. Just staring at Briar and the wall, eyes darting back and forth.

BRIAR MICHAELS. but at times i wondered if i had not come a long way to find that what i had been searching for was something i left behind
Despite Hogwarts being many hundred years old—the school still contained many, many secrets and dark histories undiscovered. Several were revealed after the second dark war, but many were left. Some were formed in the actual building of the school, while others had been scattered across Hogwarts’s extensive timeline. As was the mystery of the white light. The small indention in this wall, actually smoothed over by a renovator, had been untouched for over five-hundred years. Well, technically, it hadn’t really been touched in its entire existence, but details and plot spoilers people! Briar knew only a small part of this. She knew that the school’s history and mysteries ranged from the bright to dark—from the Room of Requirement (which had long ago been publically discovered) to the Chamber of Secrets (still buried in the dark history of the parseltounges). However, the ratios of bright mysteries to dark ones were huge to little. More often were innocent wishes granted than horrific murders brought upon here. Out of the many adventures Briar had brought upon herself, few gave her nightmares—or brought a serious threat to her life. She had very little reason to be afraid now, surely anything totally horrific would have been found by now?
Yet Briar felt uneasy—something scarcely used, and even then only in the most complex of situations.
So when her wand grew hot, combined with the steadily growing uneasiness, Briar knew that this was no innocent wishing-well she had stumbled upon. A surge of warmth jolted up her arm, quickly turning into a boiling-hot surge that was painful—yet not—like a nip from a dog. The girl’s eyes widened slightly, her uneasiness growing into a steady wailing alarm in the back of her head. She vaguely heard Colton say something about leaving it, which she automatically nodded to (planning on doing just that in her sudden surge of alarm) before a loud BOOM! with seemingly no source rocked the air. Ears wheeling from the shock—they immediately replaced the sound with a dull vibrating and a faint ringing in her ears as one might hear after a huge overwhelming sound. However, peering around with blurry eyes (Briar covering her ears at the sudden noise) and flickering back to the light—nothing seemed to have happened to initiate the sound. No explosion, no debris, her wand seemed to be intact—
And right before it happened, Briar wasn’t sure looking back on it whether she was seeing things (her eyes being all blurry after all) or if it really did happen, but the Hufflepuff could’ve almost sworn that her arm looked almost transparent.
“OW!”
Briar reeled back, hands moving from her ears to her head. She fell straight on her back, scrambling to sit back up in a half hunched over position with eyes screwed shut for half-a-second. Eyes narrowed, the girl glared up and in front of her—wondering what she had hit that felt so much like a stone-wall. What had she hit?
A stone wall. Man. She was getting good at guessing what hit her!
At least the ringing was gone now—everything seemed completely silent, unnaturally silent, now—Briar rubbed her forehead where she had slammed it into the wall tenderly before lowering her hands (one holding her wand) at the satisfaction of no blood. What had happened? She had been moving backwards, away from this wall—not towards it. Blearily, Briar glanced behind her—to where Colton was—only to find him not there. Jolting upwards with a sudden surge of adrenaline, Briar leapt to her feet, glancing around to and fro—about to call his name—when something more important caught her attention.
A flash of white.
Slowly, hairs on the back of her neck standing on end, the girl turned all the way around. Froze. And stared.
It…it… everything was wrong. The circular stone-railing that surrounded the tower was cracked and crumbling. The sky was a pitch black, looking so wrong and empty—as if the stars themselves had turned black or run away. There was no color—rather, everything had been shuffled into an odd grayscale as if Briar had been plucked up and transported to some old, faded, black and white movie. Rather unnerved now, but not totally freaked out yet, Briar let her head whip from side to side taking in everything—everything—and how empty and hollow it seemed. Slowly, she backed up until her back was pressed firmly against the stone wall, not quite sure about what she was supposed to do—how she was supposed to get back.
Turning around again, Briar stared at the wall, so identical yet not, her nose so close to its grainy surface. Sighing, she leaned forward, resting her head against it—one of her hands was coming up and spreading on the cool surface of the stone—eyes closing. She had really screwed up this time, eh? But still—this was something to be made the best of. Something she could take control of—if only she could get excited again—if her spirits weren’t suddenly, uncharacteristically, plunging so low. Then Briar opened her eyes, rather quickly—and was once more astounded by what she saw.
The girl took several rapid steps back, hand nervously coming off the wall and down to her side. Whatever she had seen had disappeared the moment her contact with the wall had—and it took several more minutes of Briar inwardly debating before she stepped forward and pressed her hand to the wall again.
It was back. Briar flinched, but didn’t move otherwise. The wall had flickered to transparency—bursting with a swarm of golds and reds and yellows that seemed so out of place in this black and white world. It took a few seconds, her adjusted eyes actually hurting looking at it, but eventually Briar could recognize that what was inside this wall was… Hogwarts. The real one. Like a two-way mirror where only one side could see through. She even saw Colton, which was a relief—and now the forth-year just had to figure out how to get back. Could he see her? Briar doubted it. She could barely see him-- much less what he was doing.
It was time to get creative.

x he tried to teach me from the very start the meaning of love, so nobody breaks my heart He had told her to let it go. He swore she was about to leave it. Colton has never tried to drop someone’s curiosity out of the way. He always let them fill their minds with creativity and adventure. He never stopped anyone even if he knew they should not be doing what they were about to do. He just went along with it. This time it was nearly different for Colton. The reason he felt the need of needing to stop this particular adventure of Briar’s was that someone could get hurt. That was the only time he ever tried to end a adventure, prank, or anything of the sorts. Colton was gullible and sometimes he did easily fall for jokes, or did something that he did not realize the consequences for. However, the young Hufflepuff sometimes was aware of his surroundings. Sometimes he knew when something was going to end horribly for someone. And this right here, this wall and the light, and the sounds, alarmed him. He feared Briar was going to get hurt.
Just as he could notice a look in her eyes that was telling him she was going to agree with him, just this once, on this not being a good idea, a loud boom rang out. It had scared the skin right off of his bones. “Bloody Hell!” he shouted out. These words that often never came out of his mouth. His face was just turning red at the thought of what he just screamed out. It was not often that he swore even though ‘bloody hell ‘ was not really a big ‘ oh no’ swear word anyways. It just only ever came out of his mouth when something bad happened, and this right here almost seemed like some sort of nightmare scenario.
As he got lost in his own thoughts of the words that just came out of his mouth, he nearly forgot where he was, and who he was with, having major ADHD and all. His mind finally focused again to the scene in front of him and he turned to look at Briar…
That was when he began to panic. “Briar!” he screamed out. He felt his whole body begin to shake. He felt his heart fall into a pit of despair at the bottom of his stomach. He quickly turned around to see if she was behind him and no luck. No luck to his left or to his right. “ Briar!” He screamed out again, racing over to the entrance of the tower and looking down the stairs to see if she had left, and again, no luck! “ BRIAR!” his voice panicked as he shouted again, he licked his lips, as he ran back to the wall, staring at it with a blank expression on his face.
He wasn’t sure what to do. Should he run like the wind to get a Professor? Should he just go look for her? Maybe she just left and he dazed off or something, he just was not sure what to do! He walked over to the wall and placed his hands on the wall… as if thinking she could have somehow vanished through the wall? That was impossible, wasn’t it!?
“ Briar…” he yelled again, “ Where are you…” he mustered out, as he felt himself going a bit weak, and wetness drain out of his eyes as he began to tear up a little bit. This girl really was like a little sister to him and he didn’t want anything bad to happen to her.
And now…
Here she was…
